Fun was had…

Serious fun was had this past weekend.  I am back from my sewing weekend with the  local Modern Quilt Guild and feeling incredibly inspired!  So many projects were completed from my “need to be sewed or worked on” pile and I am over the moon about it.  As for the quilting aspect, I didn’t get a quilt made nor did I end up working on the one I brought.  I started to work on it but kept getting up to iron pieces and then made a few mistakes and decided to scrap it and work on something else.  I’ve come to realize that I need to pick a small quilted throw or table runner to start with because the quilt I brought to make is ginormous (I did get a couple of quilted bags made).

My sewing spot!

It was so wonderful to talk with so many other sewers, quilters, knitters – so many multitalented women!  The talent in the room blew me away.  Seriously.  The quilts that were being made were stunning.  I learned so much from others about modifying patterns, where there are great fabrics stores in Boston and north, knitting tips etc.  There was even talk of some that were making plans to go to quiltCon in Georgia next year (yes, please!).  I squeezed in a trip to Mardens (woot woot!) but I was mindful and didn’t buy too much fabric.

Mardens!

One garment I worked on was the Gallery Tunic by Liesl + Co.  I love the gingham one shown on the cover of the pattern and that’s exactly what I wanted to make so I cut the View B tunic in black gingham,.  Many reviews mentioned that the top was rather roomy so I went down a size and cut an 8.  It fits well in the body but is slightly snug in the shoulders.  I think next time I will cut a 10 in the shoulder area and an 8 everywhere else.  I didn’t make a muslin for this top and just figured it would fit me based on the finished measurements on the pattern.  Also, I didn’t make the cuffs but I would like to try them next time.  When I tried the tunic on I felt like the neck and placket were a little stiff from the interfacing but after a wash they aren’t.  I will definitely make more of these for sure!  The pattern is very well written and there’s also an online Sew-Along on the OliverandS website if you get stuck.  I’m a visual person so I referred to the pictures on the sew-along, when I had a question.

I’m glad to be home and missed my other half and the little people.  That being said, it is really wonderful to have opportunities to get away and work on things I am passionate about.  Getting time alone to do fun things isn’t easy with small children but it is so necessary!  My husband occasionally says “Happy Wife, Happy Life”.  It’s true!  These experiences challenge and inspire me creatively and my soul thrives on it; which equals Happiness.  🙂
